Date Sold 8/4/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Jumbo Window Card Spook Show Poster (WC; measures 22" x 28 1/4" [56 x 72 cm]) (Learn More) Spooks On the Loose, the circa 1950s Spook Show ("The Great Toussaint and Company in 'Bedlam of Terrors'"; "On our stage"; "Guaranteed to scare the daylights out of you... Make up a spook party"; "Come see it! We dare you..."; "The Thing from Out of This World"; "First time on any stage"; "Can you stand 1001 mystery chills?"; "All in person!"; "Dr. Neff's the greatest thrill show of all time!"; "Sandra the beautiful girl burned alive! Before your very eyes"; "Exotic! Exciting! Vampire Bat Girl"; "Also horror chiller-diller on screen"). This was a poster for a "spook show" of the 1930s ("spook shows" started in the 1930s, and continued into the late 1960s, with their greatest prominence in the late 1940s and 1950s). Local theaters would book three to five low budget movies, and then advertise them as a late night "spook show". Often they would have "live" acts on stage (sometimes famous actors who had appeared in monster movies would appear on stage in full make up, and sometimes it would be local actors dressed as monsters), and often the posters would make outrageous promises (sometimes they might say a person would be beheaded on stage, etc!). Not too many of these spook show posters survive (almost all the known surviving ones are window cards, some of which are 14" x 22", and some of which are 22" x 28", and the shows certainly had very limited runs). The few "spook show" window cards that DO survive are rarely in even "very good" condition. If anyone knows more about this specific spook show or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that these "Spook Show" window cards are notorious for having wild and crazy taglines, but this is surely one of the very best we have ever seen (read the taglines for yourself and see if you don't agree!). Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. Some of these items can ONLY be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. On some of them (for example f it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: fair. The card has much water staining and other staining scattered throughout. There is a 6" uneven tear in the lower right border. Obviously, this poster can be restored, but bear in mind its condition and the cost of restoration before placing a bid. Learn More about condition grades
