A Vintage German Softcover Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 136 pages) (Learn More)

Vom Werden Deutcher Filmkunst (The Making of German Cinematic Art, The Sound Film), the 136-page 1935 German movie album that was distributed by a company called Reemtsma documenting the history of the silent film industry in Germany. This company made a total of 24 albums like this between 1932 and 1940, but only this album and it's sequel (about sound films) were movie related. This album contains many, many bookplates from 1930s German films and more, including Al Jolson in the Jazz Singer, Marlene Dietrich in Blue Angel, Lilian Harvey in Hocus Pocus, and many more (the volume is restricted to solely German movies, but apparently someone connected to the publication of the book felt they had to include an image from The Jazz Singer, and it is a great one! Of special sad interest is a 3-page section entitled "German Film Awake" [in German], which has an artwork portrait of both Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. We don't speak German, but we suspect it is a fascinating history of film under the Nazis [see our images]). All of the images in this album are actually "tipped in" bookplates (pasted onto the pages), because this company distributed the albums and bookplates separately, and it was up to the buyer to paste them in. Note that the tipped-in bookplates measure two sizes (3 1/4" x 4 3/4" and 4 3/4" x 6 3/4"). Note that this volume solely covers German sound movies [it is volume 2]. There was an earlier volume (that says "1 Teil: Der Stumme Film" on the title page) that solely covered silent movies. Finally, note that there are two versions of this album. They are extremely similar except one has a cover with a tipped-in color image at top center, and the other has an embossed gold mask in the same area. The one with the mask has a 1935 copyright at the bottom of the title page and the one with the tipped-in image on the cover is missing the date from that area, but is otherwise identical (we wonder if someone didn't notice that the copyright date was left off and that caused them to print more albums with it, or it is also possible that it could have been the other way around, that they originally printed it with the copyright date, but then printed them without it). The same exact situation exists with the second volume in this series (the one devoted to silent movies), where one version has a tipped-in image, and the other has an embossed gold mask on the cover.

Important Added Info: Note that this is the version of the book with the tipped-in image on the cover (see above). Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads.
