An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]; mounted to a sheet of foamcore that measures 46" x 90"; see below) (Learn More) Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, the 1940 Ford Beebe and Ray Taylor science fiction (sci-fi) comic-strip action adventure fantasy serial ("12 NEW dynamic episodes"; "From the Alex Raymond newspaper feature owned and copyrighted by King Features Syndicate") starring Buster Crabbe ("as Flash Gordon"), Carol Hughes ("as Dale Arden"), Charles Middleton ("as Emperor Ming"), Anne Gwynne ("as Sonja"), Frank Shannon ("as Dr. Zarkov"), Shirley Dean ("as Princess Aura"), and Roland Drew ("as Prince Barin"). Note that the first movie based on Alex Raymond's great newspaper comic strip was "Flash Gordon" in 1936. It was followed by "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" in 1938, and then this movie in 1940. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that someone had this linenbacked three-sheet framed, and the framer glued the entire poster to a piece of very large foamcore. That worked well in keeping the poster flat within the frame, but of course, it creates a real problem for shipping the poster, because it will need to be sent in an EXTREMELY large flat package. While we can make such a package, it will require that we pack this poster between four super heavy 48" x 92" boards that we have purchased for $10 each, meaning that the cost of packaging this poster alone is $40 (because of the expense of the large cardboard). VERY IMPORTANT! This poster will likely cost around $200 total to send within the U.S. via ground UPS (but of course, we will only charge the actual cost of shipping) plus the above stated $40 for the packaging materials (we are also auctioning similar size posters that could be packed together with this one, and if so, the shipping per poster will come down drastically). Please bear this shipping cost in mind before placing a bid on this poster (and it would surely cost many hundreds of dollars to send it out of the United States, so we ask that no one bid on this poster unless they can accept delivery of it within the U.S.). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. Most of these items absolutely can only be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. Some of them might SEEM like they could be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet, but they can't. The reason these items are in this auction is specifically because they CAN'T be rolled (because rolling any of them would damage them, even if they somehow can be rolled). So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item when ready for shipping), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. IN THE CASE OF EXTREMELY LARGE FLAT ITEMS, THE SHIPPING COST WILL BE VERY HIGH, SO PLEASE DO NOT BID WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT THAT ADDED SHIPPING AMOUNT, AND INCLUDE THAT AMOUNT IN WHAT YOU BID (so if you would pay $150, but the shipping is likely $100, then only bid $50). And those who live outside the U.S. and who do not have a U.S. address to ship to SHOULD NOT BID AT ALL ON EXTREMELY LARGE FLAT ITEMS, BECAUSE THEY COST HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO SEND OUTSIDE THE U.S. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds and some pretty minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, but, as noted above, someone glued the linenbacked poster to a very large sheet of foamcore. At some point after this was done, someone tried to remove it from the foamcore, and they separated it in the top right corner. That corner could easily be re-glued, but the fact that they only were able to separate a corner indicates that it would be a significant and time consuming job to remove the entire linenbacked poster from the foamcore. So do not bid on this poster thinking it can be easily separated from the foamcore, because it cannot. Learn More about condition grades
