A Vintage Softcover Book (measures 9" x 11 1/4" [23 x 29 cm]; 200 pages) (Learn More)

The Cast, the 1933 Clifford Robertson illustrated casting directory reference book ("Volume 4"; "February 1933"; "Quarter Annually") listing actors, actresses, children, management, studios, and more. There were lots of publications like these in the 1920s and 1930s, almost always dividing actors into categories like "leading", "heavy", "character", "comedian", etc. Some were elaborate hardcovers and some were oversized softcovers. They apparently charged people to have a listing , and surprisingly some fairly successful stars would take out listings in publications like these (see our images for some of the more notable people who are noted in this volume, but we did not make a great effort to find the best ones). Casting directories were published from the 1930s on, and they would have listings of people looking for jobs in Hollywood, and they made their money by selling "featured ads" to people who wanted greater recognition! Very few of them have survived, surely because people who received them considered them like old newspapers, to be discarded after they were outdated.
Important Added Info: Note that unlike most casting directories of this time, this one contains a large number of full-page images, with some established stars like Charley Chase, and some up-and-coming stars like Walter Pidgeon. It is one of a wonderful collection of early "casting directories" we were consigned! We looked through each of these and selected the best ones (ones with listings for people who later became very famous), and those are listed individually in this set of auctions. The remaining ones, where we did not see famous people listed, will be listed in groups in our next bulk lot auction. After that, we will have no more of these extremely rare books! Also note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads.

Condition: good. There is light brown staining on the first few interior pages, but otherwise, the book is in nice condition!
