An Undated (probably 1943) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More)

Melody Trail, the 1935 Joseph Kane singing cowboy western musical ("Radio's singing cowboy in a roundup of melody"; "From the Story by Sherman Lowe & Elizabeth Burbridge") starring Gene Autry, Buck (billed as "Buck the Wonder Dog"), Ann Rutherford (in her third movie role!), Smiley Burnette, Wade Boteler, Champion (Gene's horse), and Willy Castello. Note that the dog in this movie was Buck, the very same dog who starred in Call of the Wild with Clark Gable this same year. This was his first movie after that, which is why he got such great billing. But alas, he only appeared in a total of 8 movies, and his last one was in 1940 as a "dog in a pet store", after which we don't know what happened to him.

Important Added Info: Note that most people think of restorers deceiving people with fake posters and extensive restoration as being a fairly recent phenomenon, but actually it has been going on for many years with one specific type of poster. Republic Pictures would issue re-release posters with the word "RE-RELEASE" printed small under the title, and for at least twenty years, restorers have been backing such posters and painting over that word so that it matches the background, and then selling the poster as an original! This is one of those such posters.

What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction either was NOT linenbacked very well, OR the poster had more significant defects (you can tell which type it is by reading our written comments about the poster's condition). In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image!

Condition: good. The poster had paper loss at the crossfolds and creases and tears on parts of some foldlines and in the borders. The word "RE-RELEASE" under the title was painted over . Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Except for the deception, the poster was nicely backed, and displays well, but the word "RE-RELEASE" has been painted over!
