An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Devil's In Love, the 1933 William Dieterle (billed as "Wilhelm Dieterle") Northern Africa murder mystery French Foreign Legion melodrama (about a military doctor who is unfairly transferred to another post by a major, and when the major is found dead, the doctor is the natural suspect, and he must find a way to prove himself innocent) starring Victor Jory, Loretta Young, Vivienne Osborne, David Manners, Herbert Mundin, J. Carrol Naish, Akim Tamiroff, Emile Chautard, C. Henry Gordon, and Bela Lugosi (in an uncredited role as the military prosecutor!). Note that director William Dieterle is one of the most legendary directors, but he does not usually get the acclaim that the other top directors do. This is odd, because he directed many wonderful movies, and he made the transition from German movies to English movies without difficulty. He was an actor in many German movies, starting in the silents, and his career remained strong throughout the 1940s, and he really deserves far more recognition than he gets. Note that in this one movie, and in one other, he was billed under his birth name of "Wilhelm". Perhaps he felt he had achieved enough success that he could use his "real" name. But the studio quickly went back to billing him as "William", perhaps because of the growing anti-German sentiment in the U.S. as a result of the growth of the Nazi party.
