An Original Vintage 7" x 9" [18 x 23 cm] News Photo (Learn More) Hal Roach was a legendary producer of mostly comedy shorts from 1915 to 1942 (he is credited as the producer on over 1,200 of them!). He was the guiding force behind the Our Gang shorts, the Laurel & Hardy films, and the early Harold Lloyd films, among many, many others. In the early days, his films were released through Pathe. Later, he began distributing through MGM, and he sold his assets to them in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He lived until 1992, past his 100th birthday! AND D.W. Griffith was one of the most famous directors of all time from the 1900s to the 1950s. Some of his movies include: Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages, Way Down East, Orphans of the Storm, Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl, Judith of Bethulia, and The Birth of a Nation (the movie he is best remembered for, but which is extremely controversial today, because of its depiction of post-Civil-War-era black African Americans). He passed away in 1948 at the age of 73. Important Added Info: Note that this great news photo, which measures 7" x 9" [18 x 23 cm], shows two of the greatest legends of movie making. In 1939, Hal Roach hired D.W. Griffith, who had been "absent from films for 8 years", to "return to picture making as an associated in the Roach Organization", and they note that "his only contract was a firm hand clasp"!
