An Undated (possibly 1947) Re-release Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (released in the U.S. in 1921 and in England in 1924 as "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari"), the 1920 Robert Wiene German expressionism silent horror thriller ("A thrilling fantastic photo-play"; about a man who sleepwalks in a disturbing world and there is a mysterious Dr. Caligari who seems to be his arch enemy!) starring Werner Krauss (in the title role as Doctor Caligari), Conrad Veidt (as Cesare, the somnambulist), Friedrich Feher, Lil Dagover, and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski. Note that this movie is considered by many to be the first major horror movie ever. Much of the movie takes place within the dreams of the sleepwalker, and the sets are distorted to reflect his distorted mind (they were made of paper and the shadows were painted on to the paper!)

Important Added Info: Note that there is no way of knowing exactly when this wonderful still is from. It has a wonderful image of Conrad Veidt being placed in the box while Werner Krauss stands by (perhaps the best image from the movie!). It is surely from 1947 or earlier, because it was in a newspaper "morgue", and there are two date stamps on the back showing that it was used in 1947 and 1974, but of course, it could have also been created at a much earlier time. Our best guess is that it may well be from 1947. We don't know of any U.S. releases of the movie between 1921 and the 1960s, but that is not to say that there weren't any. So bid on this still knowing it is from 1947 or earlier, but don't assume it is surely from earlier, because we are not saying that.

Condition: fair to good. The still was used in a newspaper or magazine and there are grease pencil printer marks and paint enhancements within the image (so it would show up better in the printed article). There are faint smudges and creases scattered throughout the still, with glue staining at bottom center, caused by a snipe that was once glued to the back. We don't know how easy or difficult it would be to remove the marks and enhancements from the image. It is possible a restorer could remove much or all of it, but don't bid on this still assuming that to be true. It is definitely true that the still can be displayed and enjoyed exactly as it is, but look closely at our super-sized image and read the above before bidding on this.
