An Unfolded Russian Special Poster (measures 22 1/4" x 33 1/4" [57 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

Soldiers of Peace, Be Vigilant (literal translation of the Russian title), the 1960 Russian Soviet Union poster featuring Volikov artwork of a Soviet soldier standing with a rocket and holding an American pilot by his parachute. Note that this poster is in response to the 1960 U-2 Incident, in which a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Soviet Air Defense Forces while it was performing photographic aerial reconnaissance deep into Soviet territory. The aircraft was flown by Francis Gary Powers, who parachuted safely and was captured. Initially, the U.S. authorities said it was a civilian weather research aircraft, but were forced to admit the mission's true purpose when the Soviets produced the captured pilot and parts of the U-2's surveillance equipment (which including photographs of Soviet military bases). The event caused great embarrassment to the United States and prompted a marked deterioration in its relations with the Soviet Union. Powers was convicted of espionage and sentenced to three years of imprisonment plus seven years of hard labor but was released two years later during a prisoner exchange.
Artist: V.P. Volikov

Condition: good. The poster paper has "softened" somewhat and it has creases scattered in various areas throughout (see our image). Certainly the poster could be restored and linenbacked and it would look great, but please bear in mind its defects and cost of restoration before placing a bid.
