Date Sold 6/30/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Folded Stage Play Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 41 1/2" [70 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) Jesse James, the circa 1910s cowboy western stage play production ("The sensational Western life drama"; "The Missouri Outlaw"). Note that we have seen multiple posters that are likely from the same production. Some mention "W.I. Swain's Western Spectacular Production" and some do not. Also, some posters include art of a black African American couple. All of the posters have been printed by the Donaldson Litho Co of Newport, KY. It is certainly possible that there were multiple different productions (perhaps one even had an all-black cast). We have seen other similar posters to these in museum collections, and they have guessed at dates of "1890s" to "1920s", but our guess is that these are 1910s. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: fair to good. The poster was folded three times vertically, but not horizontally. It had many creases scattered throughout the poster, with a 5" horizontal tear near the center of the poster, and many tears and small areas of paper loss around the edges. Someone put paper tape on the back of all the borders and the folds to reinforce them. Certainly, this poster can be restored, but bear that expense in mind before placing a bid on it.
