He was one of the first important soloists in jazz and was perhaps the first notable jazz saxophonist. His erratic temperament hampered his career, however, and not until the late 1940s did he earn wide acclaim. Bechet passed away in 1959 at the age of 62. Artist: Pierre Merlin Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster! We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning.
UPDATED 06/19/2017: Note that we have received further information about this poster from a knowledgeable collector. The poster is from 1955 and not 1959 as we originally mentioned, and the stamp on the poster is from the Olympia, which was one of the most popular concert halls in France. To commemorate a million records sold, Bechet received a Gold Record from the record company Disques Vogue, and a free concert at the Olympia was planned. Bechet performed along with Claude Luter, Andre Reweliotty and their orchestras, and the crowd loved it. However, because of his popularity, the crowd far exceeded the maximum capacity of the venue, and eventually a riot broke out! During the riot, memorabilia was stolen, damage of 2 millions francs was caused to the location, and it became known as "the night the Olympia was broken". What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good.
