An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Locandina Movie Poster (measures 13" x 27 1/4" [33 x 69 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! Important Added Info: Note that so many people love this movie (and it was recently voted the best movie of all time by the most distinguished poll!), and of course, many of the posters have art that is very similar to that of the classic Saul Bass U.S. one-sheet. This Italian locandina has a completely different artwork image of Stewart and Novak with the obsessed face of Stewart looming behind them, and we have never seen this artwork before (and we have never auctioned this poster before). Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had several horizontal folds near the center and several others scattered through the poster. It had many creases and scuffs scattered throughout, with pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, but I would think most collectors would be happy to display this great poster on their wall, in spite of the somewhat noticeable creases and scuffs scattered throughout.
