An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (11x14; LC; measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Gene Stratton-Porter's Freckles, the 1928 James Leo Meehan romantic teenage lumberjack melodrama ("When life hung in the balance!"; based on the novel by Gene Stratton-Porter; about an orphan who falls in love with a beautiful girl, but he thinks she is too good for him, but when he is seriously injured by a falling tree, she nurses him back to health and he confesses his feelings for her and she reciprocates) starring Johnny Fox (in the title role as Freckles), Hobart Bosworth, Eulalie Jensen, William Scott, and Lafe McKee. Note that there is a major oddity about this movie. While sources correctly list Gene Stratton-Porter (a famous writer who died in 1924) as the author of the story this movie is based on, almost all references that we can find also list "Gene Stratton-Porter" as playing the lead role of the teenage girl, which would be doubly difficult, because not only would she have been 65 when the movie was made, but she had also been dead for 2 years! A knowledgeable collector pointed out that Gene Stratton-Porter's granddaughter, Gene Stratton Monroe, appeared in the 1925 film "The Keeper of the Bees" (another film adaption of a Stratton-Porter book) at age 11. A book we found online mentions that the granddaughter was (at least sometimes) billed under her grandmother's name, and that it is the granddaughter that starred in this 1928 movie. Just to make things even more convoluted, Stratton-Porter's other granddaughter, Jeanette Porter Meehan, wrote the titles for this silent film, and her husband directed it! Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: good.
