Van Dyke silent World War I (WWI) canine dog German shepherd melodrama ("From the story by Norman Houston") starring Ralph Forbes, Marceline Day, Flash the Dog, Bert Roach, William Fairbanks, and Marc McDermott Note that director W.S. Van Dyke had gotten his start as an assistant on D.W. Griffith's "Intolerance" in 1916, and the following year, he was a director of many movies. He directed many westerns and other movies throughout the 1920s, and in 1928, he got his second big break when he helped Robert Flaherty direct "Shadows in the South Seas", and the following year, he was signed by MGM to make "Trader Horn", but it took two years to complete due to all the complications of location filming. The following year, he directed "Tarzan the Ape Man", and the huge success of that movie made him one of the top directors of the 1930s. Note that William Fairbanks was a German-American born Carl Uhlman, and he started in movies at the age of 22 in 1916, and he acted under his own name. In 1921, he had an inspiration and changed his name to "William Fairbanks" (although he was no relation to Douglas Fairbanks), and he started starring in mostly action movies, like Doug did at the same time, and many of William's movies involved car racing, and he did his own stunts. He had a fair amount of success in westerns and action movies, but most of his movies were made for lesser studios, and his career ended in 1928 with the coming of sound. He passed away in 1945 at the age of 50, after having contracted pneumonia. Also note that Flash the Wonder Dog first appeared as a puppy in 1925's "His Master's Voice" and appeared in eight more movies over the next 13 years (which makes us wonder if his owner didn't pull a "switch" somewhere along the way).
