eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5h574 DEVIL DANCER pressbook '27 sexy shimmy dancer Gilda Gray in cool costume! Date Sold 2/22/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" [24 x 32 cm]; 22 pages). Also included are 2 ad supplements that have one page and 10 pages AND a 4pg herald (see below for more information about the herald) (Learn More) The Devil Dancer, the 1927 Fred Niblo silent family relationship romantic melodrama (based on the story "by Harry Hervey"; about a white girl who is raised in a Himalayan monastery, where she is held captive, and an English explorer finds the place, and he rescues the girl and falls in love with her, but his sister is appalled and hires Muslim entertainers to kidnap her and he eventually finds her dancing with them!) starring Gilda Gray (in the title role as Takla, The Devil Dancer), Clive Brook, Anna May Wong, Serge Temoff, and Michael Vavitch. Note that around the time this movie was made, actress Gilda Gray had created a dance craze with a new dance called "The Shimmy", and it was a natural for her to appear as a dancer in a movie! Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that there is a really cool 4-page herald which measures 3 1/2" x 5 3/4" when folded, and it is "tipped-in" to one of the pressbook pages. Also, note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing
of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had
already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!
UPDATED 02/17/2015: Note that we initially neglected to mention that this pressbook comes with a herald. We have added images of the herald and updated the Important Added Info. Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The covers are separated at the spine and there is darkening on one of the exterior pages which does not have any art.
