The Moncada Barracks was a military barracks in Santiago de Cuba which, and in 1953 it was the site of an armed attack by a small group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. While the attack failed and Fidel was captured and jailed, it is widely accepted as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. The date on which the attack took place, July 26, was adopted by Castro as the name for his revolutionary movement (Movimiento 26 Julio or M 26-7) which eventually toppled the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista on January 12th, 1959. Jose Julian Marti Perez was a Cuban national hero and important figure in Latin American literature. Marti is considered one of the great turn-of-the-century Latin American intellectuals, and through his writings and political activity, he became a symbol for Cuba's bid for independence against Spain in the 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence". OSPAAAL (The Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America) is a Cuban political movement with the stated purpose of promoting the causes of socialism and communism in the Third World, fighting globalization, imperialism, neoliberalism and defending human rights. OSPAAAL was founded in Havana in January 1966, after the Tricontinental Conference, a meeting of leftist delegates from several nations. Many of the posters created by OSPAAAL featured multiple languages so they could be used for international audiences, and they often came in copies of OSPAAAL's Tricontinental magazine. The U.S. embargo of Cuba and the fall of the Soviet Union eventually caused considerable difficulty in poster production, and it wasn't until the 2000s that production was able to increase again.
