A Linenbacked English Travel Poster (measures 25" x 40" [64 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Transport for London, the English travel poster encouraging people to travel through London and the surrounding areas via the London Underground and London Overground public transportation system which includes underground subways, train systems, air line cable cars, escalators, and more! Both the Underground and Overground are currently controlled by the Transport for London government body which was established in 2000. The London Underground (also known as the Underground or the Tube) has its origins in the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway which was opened in 1863. The early tube lines, originally owned by several private companies, were brought together under the "Underground" brand in the early 20th century. The Underground was a prominent patron of art and design, commissioning many new station buildings, posters and public artworks in a modernist style. The famous London Underground logo was created by Edward Johnston in 1916. Artist: Frederick Charles Herrick Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare pre-World War II English travel poster (very few survive from before World War II because of the massive paper shortages there). The art is fascinating, because in addition to showing rabbits, it also shows small "hobbit-like" people (perhaps leprechauns)! If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had pinholes, creases, and a few tears around the edges. It had a slightly diagonal tear in the bottom center of the image, with a tiny bit of surface paper loss. It had a few small creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
