I don't think there is any doubt that the people of my race have every right in the world and every reason in the world to resist.'"; "Issued by July 23rd Defense Committee") featuring art of black African American Fred Ahmed Evans with his fist raised. Note that this poster relates to a very important trial that occurred in Cleveland on July 23, 1968. On that day, when there were protests over the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which had occurred three months earlier, a gun battle broke out between police and members of the Black Nationalist Party (a militant protest group), and when the battle was over, seven people were dead, three of whom were policemen. One of the leaders of the protest group, Fred Ahmed Evans (known as "Ahmed Evans"), was tried for the murder of the policemen. There was testimony saying that he had trained the members of the group in using guns and had told them they would be killing police, but there was little direct evidence presented. A jury of 12 white people found him guilty and he was sentenced to be executed. His sentence was commuted, and he was given life in prison, and he died in prison in 1978 from cancer. This poster was created during the time of the trial, and many examples of it were posted in Cleveland, to raise awareness of the case and to help win freedom for Evans.
