An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22") (Learn More)

On the Firing Line with the Germans, the 1915 William H. Durborough silent World War I (WWI) military 9-reel documentary (the directors of photography were Wilbur H. Durborough and R.G. Ries). It would seem quite likely that this was a war documentary shown to American audiences, and there was some footage shot in Poland and Russia. Given that the U.S. did not enter the war until April 6, 1917, it is possible this movie was sympathetic to the Germans, and was intended to KEEP the U.S. out of the war (in 1916, Woodrow Wilson had been elected President, and a major part of his platform was that the U.S. would not enter "the European war")! We have found a reference that implies that this WAS a pro-German documentary, for it mentions this movie, and then says "By 1918, the tenor of films had changed", and 1918 movies included "The German Curse in Russia" and "The Kaiser: The Beast of Berlin". We assume the soldier pictured on the poster is a highly-decorated German soldier, and perhaps the movie showed how heroic the Germans had been in fighting in Poland and Russia. If anyone knows more about this movie or the image of the soldier, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards.

Condition: good to very good. The poster had smudges, stains, tears, and small paper loss around the edges of the card and a 3" tear in the middle right of the image (entirely in the background above the soldier's shoulder), and a diagonal crease in the bottom left corner, just extending into the bottom left background of the image. There were some faint smudges and tiny stains scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed, as while you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects from close up, from any reasonable viewing distance, the poster displays great!
