An Original Vintage Movie Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 134 pages) (Learn More)

Obsession, the 1976 Brian De Palma horror mystery is-she-or-isn't-she thriller ("Story by Brian de Palma & Paul Schrader"; about a man whose life is shattered when his wife and daughter are killed during a kidnapping, but then ten years later, he meets a woman who is an exact duplicate of his wife) starring Cliff Robertson, Genevieve Bujold, John Lithgow (in his second movie role!), Sylvia Kuumba Williams, Wanda Blackman, and J. Patrick McNamara. Note that this movie has always been controversial, because while all agree it is an excellent movie, some see it as an homage to Alfred Hitchcock, while others call it a "rip-off". Certainly, there are major similarities between this movie and Vertigo, and De Palma hired Bernard Hermann to do the musical score (and Hermann did the classic Hitchcock score for Psycho, and worked on Vertigo!), but the two movies are far from the same, and each person must view them both and judge for themselves how they feel about them. It is likely that this controversy has kept this movie from being as highly acclaimed as many feel it should be!

Important Added Info: Note that this script is the revised draft from March 14, 1974 and the screenplay was written by Paul Schrader. Also note that the script has the working title "Deja Vu", but the movie ultimately was called "Obsession". Also note that there are a multitude of different colored revision pages that are undated, but there are four different colors, and very little of the unrevised script remains (primarily the first 24 pages!). Note that this script was personally sent by Paul Schrader to Charles Shyer. Mr. Shyer tells us that "Paul and I were friends back in the day... and we'd exchange screenplays. I also liked his screenplay writing style - and found it instructive." This is one of seven scripts that were sent by Paul Schrader to Charles Shyer, and they are in seven separate auctions, and each of them has this paragraph on them! Note that this script was consigned to us directly from director/screenwriter Charles Shyer. Mr. Shyer is the director of many extremely popular movies from the 1970s to the present, many of which are romantic comedies, including House Calls, Private Benjamin, Baby Boom, remakes of Father of the Bride and The Parent Trap, and many others. Over the years, he collected scripts, which he received primarily in two different ways. He was friends with screenwriters, directors, and producers during those years, and they would sometimes send him scripts of their movies to get his opinion of them, and many of those are offered here. In addition, as a member of the screenwriter's branch of the Academy, he was sent many scripts where the producers hoped that their script would be nominated for a Best Screenwriting Academy Award, and many of these have "for your consideration" printed on the cover. This is a rare opportunity to purchase original scripts that come directly from the personal collection of a prominent director/screenwriter!

Condition: very good to fine. There is a gold label on the title page from "George Litto Productions". The same label was on the top of the back cover, and someone removed a very small portion of it. Other than that, and some minor wear around the edges, the script is in really nice condition! Note that we have photographed the cover of the script, the title page, the final page of the script (the one that reads "THE END"), and one or more interior pages. These images will not only provide important information about the script, but they also allow you to closely judge the condition of the script. The script is 100% complete!
