An Ad Mat Page (advertising; measures 9" x 15" [23 x 38 cm]) (Learn More) Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is an animated cartoon character who was created in 1927. It is mostly only cartoon buffs that know that Walt Disney created a character very similar to Mickey Mouse prior to Mickey's first appearance! Oswald was created by Walt Disney along with Ub Iwerks when the pair worked for Charles Mintz at Universal Studios in 1927. The character was successful, but Disney clashed with Mintz, who in 1928 not only turned down Disney's request for a raise, but he also told him he would cut his salary by 20%! Disney decided to leave, and he got the idea for Mickey Mouse, and he and Iwerks developed the character in secret. Disney left Universal and Walter Lantz was selected to replace Disney and he produced Oswald cartoons in the 1930s (Lantz is best remembered for his later creation, Woody Woodpecker). Posters from any of the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Universal cartoons are incredibly rare! Important Added Info: Note that this is a page through which theaters ordered ad mats. Theaters would mark which ones they wanted to order and send it to "Metropolitan Engravers" in Los Angeles, who would send them the mats (see our images). Condition: fair to good.
