An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Little Orphan, the 1949 Joseph Barbera & William Hanna (Hanna-Barbera) animated animation cartoon short ("1948 Academy Award Winner!"; "Produced by Fred Quimby"; in this entry, Nibbles, an orphan mouse, comes to spend Thanksgiving with Jerry, and together they team up to torment Tom; note that Nibbles had first appeared in the 1946 cartoon "The Milky Waif", and this was his second appearance) starring Tom and Jerry. Note that Tom and Jerry is a classic series of cartoons created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The first one was created in 1940, and there as a total of 114 cartoons through 1957. Seven of these won Academy Awards for Best Cartoon, tying for most wins with Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies. There were around 50 more cartoons created after the first run ended, through the early 2000s, and there were also TV shows based on these classic characters. Some people have criticized the cartoons for their "excessive violence", but actually no blood or gore was ever shown in any of them, and this type of violence is commonly referred to as "cartoon violence". Many of the Tom and Jerry cartoons are extremely clever and make wonderful use of music. They are not nearly as appreciated today as they should be, but in their day, they were among the most popular cartoons of the 1940s! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there is an oddity about this poster! It is dated 1949 at the bottom, but above the billing it says "1948 Academy Award Winner" with an Oscar statuette. This cartoon did win the Academy Award in 1949, so the only likely explanation we can come up with is that the cartoon was shown in December of 1948, so it would qualify, but that they waited to release it until after the Academy Awards in 1949, so that they could advertise it as an Academy Award winner if it won (which it did). One might wonder if there is an earlier version of this poster without the Academy Award tagline, but if so, we have never seen it, and we think that there is not one. What IS linenbacking?
