Date Sold 12/11/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan's Desert Mystery, the 1943 Wilhelm Thiele Africa action adventure jungle thriller ("Mightiest of Tarzan thrillers!"; "See boy trapped in the web of the murderous giant spider!"; "See Tarzan's fierce death battle with prehistoric monsters!"; "See Tarzan, and his friends flee the treacherous deadly sandstorm!"; "See Tarzan in the grip of the strange man-eating plant!"; "Based upon the characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs"; "From a story by Carroll Young") starring Johnny Weissmuller (in the title role as Tarzan), Nancy Kelly, Johnny Sheffield (as Boy), Otto Kruger, Joe Sawyer, Lloyd Corrigan, Robert Lowery, Frank Puglia, Phil Van Zandt and Cheetah (the chimpanzee). Note that this was the second RKO Tarzan, and once again, Maureen O'Sullivan could not be hired, because she was an MGM contract player, and RKO did not want to cast a "new" Jane, so they once again explained her absence by saying that she was away, working as a nurse for the British troops in World War II! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that you would not expect that this would be one of the most rare Tarzan one-sheets, but it is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! Perhaps this is related to the movie having a very quick re-release in 1949, which may well have used up whatever 1943 paper remained. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny bits of paper loss and separation scattered down the vertical fold and on the bottom horizontal fold, with a lesser amount of wear on the other two horizontal folds. It had pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges. It had some writing on the back that slightly bled through to the front in the right of Weissmuller's forehead. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
