Date Sold 4/14/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1960s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked INCOMPLETE Japanese "B2" Movie Poster (measures 20 1/4" x 28 5/8" [51 x 73 cm]) (Learn More) Singin' in the Rain, the classic 1952 Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly romantic musical comedy (considered by most the best musical of all time!; "What a glorious feeling"; "MGM's Technicolor Musical Treasure!"; "Suggested by the song 'Singin' In the Rain'"; about a Hollywood movie studio in the late 1920s that wants to begin making sound pictures, but their top leading lady has a dreadful voice, plus they have great difficulties adapting to the sound equipment; pretty young Debbie Reynolds comes along to dub in the singing voice of the primadonna leading lady, played to perfection by Jean Hagen) starring Gene Kelly (as Don Lockwood), Donald O'Connor (as Cosmo Brown), Debbie Reynolds (as Kathy Selden), Jean Hagen (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; as Lina Lamont), Millard Mitchell (as R.F. Simpson), and Cyd Charisse (unnamed, only referred to as "Dancer"). Note that this greatest of all Hollywood musicals had an odd beginning! The title song had been sung in "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" by Cliff Edwards, and that inspired this movie, and in addition, the song "Make 'Em Laugh" was basically plagiarized from "Be a Clown", from "The Pirate"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is only one half of the poster. Originally, it had a second "panel" that went above this panel, and that panel had the title in Japanese (we don't know what else it had, because we have never seen it). However, to someone who does not read Japanese, this can be happily displayed just as it is, because it has a great close up image, and the title is in English in the bottom left. But please bear in mind that it is an incomplete poster before placing a bid on it. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Only the bottom half of the poster is present (see above). The part of the poster that is present had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some foldlines. It had pinholes in the corners. It had paper loss in the lower right corner that affected the bottom of the logo in that area. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, but the restorer did not (of course) recreate the missing top panel, and they also did not recreate the small portion of the logo at bottom right (see our image).
