An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13" x 29 3/4" [33 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) Robbery Under Arms (released in the U.S. in 1958), the 1957 Jack Lee English Australia Outback robbery-gone-wrong action thriller ("From the novel by Rolf Bolderwood entitled 'Robbery Under Arms'"; about Australian brothers who intend to go to work in a gold mine, but they get mixed up with a gang of crooks who stage a daring robbery, and the authorities track them to their hideout where there is a bloody resolution) starring Peter Finch, Ronald Lewis, Maureen Swanson, David McCallum (in his fourth credited movie role!), Jill Ireland (in one of her very first important roles!), Laurence Naismith, Jean Anderson, Vincent Ball, Ursula Finlay, Johnny Cadell, Larry Taylor, and Russell Napier. Note that at the time of the making of this movie, Jill Ireland was married to David McCallum. They remained married for another 9 years, when she divorced and married Charles Bronson (oddly, McCallum had introduced her to Charles Bronson during the filming of "The Great Escape", a movie that featured both McCallum and Bronson!). Note that this movie was based on one of Australia's best loved books (it was first published in 1882 and has never gone out of print!). A bunch of top English actors traveled halfway across the world to Australia to film it on location, and the ending was changed from the book to give it a really violent resolution (which proved to be a tremendous audience pleaser)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned a completely different style of daybill from this movie (it has an image of Peter Finch at the top rather than an image of Maureen Swanson. But they have exactly the same design, title treatment, and credits (and printer), and they are essentially the same poster with the exception of the upper image and the background coloring, so we strongly suspect that either two different daybills were created at the same time, or that one was created first, and that the other star complained, and then they made the second one right after! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had some creases and tiny tears on the top foldline and a 4" irregular tear in the upper left border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed. At some point after it was backed, it acquired a few tiny dot stains in the left and right borders, and in the excess linen, but they are not at all distracting.
