An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Lily of the Dust, the 1924 Dimitri Buchowetzki silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("The Story of a Girl Who Fascinated Many Men!"; "From the novel by Hermann Sudermann and the play by Edward Sheldon Adapted by Paul Bern"; about a girl who goes to work in a bookstore after her mother goes insane, and she gets involved in a love triangle with a young Lieutenant and his commanding officer!) starring Pola Negri (in the title role as Lily), Ben Lyon, Noah Beery Sr., Raymond Griffith, Jeanette Daudet, and William J. Kelly. Note that Pola Negri had been a huge European star, but her first few American movies were not all that successful, so Paramount imported Russian director Dimitri Buchowetzki, who had directed her in Europe, in the hopes that he could match his successes in the United States. They hired Paul Bern (who later achieved fame as the husband of Jean Harlow, who committed suicide under cryptic circumstances) to write the screenplay. The pair wrote and directed "Men" in 1924, and then followed it up immediately with this movie, "Lily of the Dust". But Negri never matched her European success, and Buchowetzki had little success in the U.S. either. This is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and we have only auctioned five lobby cards and a herald but no other movie posters for this title! Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Note that this poster is very unusual in that it was created by combining two examples of the original poster! See below for exactly hos this was done, and also know that there are two other posters like this in this auction, and those two have this same paragraph on them. All three are incredibly rare!

Condition: good. The person who owned this owned two examples of this poster! One of them had 3" trimmed from the bottom, and fortunately the other had much damage to the upper area, but the bottom 11" was in nice condition. They came up with an unusual way to deal with this. They trimmed off the bottom 11" from the one that had no damage in that area and simply attached it to the front of the other poster by attaching it with tape from the back, and also gluing it to the front of the poster in part of the left and right borders. So there is 11" of a second poster laying on top of the bottom 8" of the poster that was missing 3" from the bottom! Both posters had been folded vertically and had some darkening and separation along the folds, but were otherwise in pretty nice condition, especially considering the age of the posters. However, the poster had originally had dark reds in it that changed to a "pink"-like color over the years, so there was fading as well. Someone put tape on the back of the other areas of the separation, but otherwise did not restoration. One could certainly simply display this incredibly rare poster as it is or one might choose to have a professional restorer separate the two posters and then properly paperback them together. This IS a complete poster, although it was made from two different posters as explained above, and there was some fading of the red in the poster.
