Did You Know... that UPS Stores are often complete rip-offs?

As you all surely know, we VERY rarely make a mistake on an item we auctioned, and have already sent to the buyer (this happens perhaps one in 10,000 auctions, but because of how much we auction, that means it happens around once a month or so).

When we do make that rare mistake, we offer to that person that they can return the item in question for a complete refund, including return shipping, so they lose nothing (why should they lose anything on our mistake?). But we know that many collectors are unknowledgeable about the best ways to ship items, so we include a warning telling them to ship via either Priority Mail or Ground UPS, and to NOT use any expedited service, like Express Mail or Next Day.

That has worked out well in the past, but just this past week we had two of these (in very different parts of the country), but both collectors had the misfortune to use a "UPS Store" (instead of going to an actual UPS location), and that set our blood to boiling! Why? One fellow paid $34.22 to send a package back to us (we have sent similar packages to this customer for just $12), and the other fellow paid $33.32 to send a package back to us (his package contained 1 poster and we have shipped a package containing 7 posters to him for just $14.47).

When we investigated, we discover the extra cost were "service fees" those stores charged, which proves they are complete rip-offs. The cost at a real UPS outlet for one of those packages would have been $12 and the other would have been $14.47! So one UPS Store made a $22.22 profit on the $12 package, and the other completely unrelated UPS Store made a $18.85 profit on the $14.47 package.

So what to do? Of course, the best solution is to go to an actual UPS location, where you won't get ripped off. But those can be located in out of the way places. Another is to go to the Post Office instead, where you won't get ripped off either.

We are investigating the possibility of issuing some kind of "return tags" to those few customers who need to return something to us, but until that happens, DO NOT SHIP THROUGH A UPS STORE (unless you are a glutton for punishment and don't mind being ripped off)!
