Cool Item Of the Week: D.O.A. pressbook

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 07/29/2013

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

This week, I have the pressbook from D.O.A., the classic 1950 Rudolph Mate San Francisco California crime film noir mystery thriller ("A picture as excitingly different as its title!"; "In all the annals of police history there has never been a story like this - of a man who had 48 hours to find his own murderer!" "An exciting story of a man who had 48 hours to avenge his own murder!"; "'I want to report a murder!' 'Who was murdered?' 'I was!"; about a man who discovers he has been poisoned, and he must catch his "killer", before he himself dies!) starring Edmond O'Brien, Pamela Britton, Luther Adler, Beverly Garland (in her first movie role!; billed as "Beverly Campbell"), Neville Brand, Lynn Baggett, William Ching, Henry Hart, and Laurette Luez. There is a mystery to us about this movie. Beverly Garland appears in her first movie and she is 4th billed, under her then-married name of Beverly Campbell (which resulted from a 4 month marriage!), but then after that, she had only bit parts for several years. How was she able to get a significant role at first and then why did she get no more for quite some time?

Here is an image of the covers and an interior spread:

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 20,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!). And remember to check out our previous Cool Items of the Week in our Cool Item of the Week archive (which is now fully searchable!).
