Cool Item Of the Week: Take a Chance pressbook

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 12/26/2011

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

This week, I have the pressbook from Take a Chance, the 1933 Monte Brice & Laurence Schwab romantic musical crime comedy ("A barrel of fun"; "From the musical play 'Take A Chance' written by the authors Schwab, DeSylva, Youmans, Brown, Whiting"; about a pair of pickpockets who work in a carnival, but go to Broadway, and get mixed up with gangsters and a beautiful girl) starring James Dunn, Cliff Edwards (sometimes billed as "Ukulele Ike", and he often performed the ukulele when he appeared in movies; he is best remembered for performing the first version of "Singing in the Rain" in "The Hollywood Revue of 1929", and for being the voice of Jiminy Cricket in "Pinocchio"), June Knight, Lillian Roth (sexy actress whose turbulent off camera life gained her far more notoriety than her movie work; she was an alcoholic and was married six times, and was never single for long; her life was the basis for the movie "I'll Cry Tomorrow" starring Susan Hayward, which brought alcoholism into the consciousness of mainstream America), Charles 'Buddy' Rogers, Dorothy Lee, and Lona Andre!

Here is an image of the front cover and back poster page:

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 25,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!).
