Cool Item Of the Week: Thin Ice pressbook covers

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 08/22/2011

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

This week, I have the pressbook from "Thin Ice", the 1937 Sidney Lanfield romantic ice skating comedy (based on the play, "Der Komet", by Attila Orbok) starring Sonja Henie (Norwegian professional ice skater who was the Norwegian skating champion at 14, and then won gold medals three times in 1928, 1932, and 1936, and the first time she was only 15!; she turned professional and had an ice show, but then was signed by 20th Century Fox, and made many ice skating movies for them over the next 10 years; she was a great businesswoman, and she was one of the ten wealthiest women in the world when she died in 1969), Tyrone Power, Arthur Treacher, Raymond Walburn, Joan Davis, Sig Ruman (German character actor of the 1930s, best remembered as the foil of many of Groucho Marx's jokes in several of the Marx Bros. movies, he slowly Americanized his name in the late 1930s, no doubt due to anti-German sentiment, but he had great success in the early 1940s playing stock German characters), Alan Hale, Leah Ray, Melville Cooper, Maurice Cass, and George Givot.

Here is an image of the front cover and the back "poster page" (see larger images by clicking on these thumbnails).

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 25,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!).
