Cool Item Of the Week: The Thief of Bagdad pressbook covers

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 07/11/2011

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

This week, I have the pressbook from "The Thief of Bagdad", the classic 1940 Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell & Tim Whelan English Arabia Iraq adventure fantasy thriller ("One thousand and one sights from the thousand of one nights...."; "Sir Alexander Korda's masterpiece of fantasy and adventure."; "produced in England and the U.S. by Alexander Korda with wondrous special effects by Lawrence W. Butler and Tom Howard, and great art direction by William Cameron Menzies") starring Conrad Veidt (memorable as Jaffar), Sabu Dastagir (billed simply as "Sabu", as he was in all his movies; as Abu the thief, son of Abu the thief, grandson of Abu the thief, etc.!), June Duprez (as the princess), John Justin (as Ahmad), Rex Ingram (sensational as The Genie!), Miles Malleson (as the Sultan of Basra), Morton Selten (as the old king), Mary Morris (as Halima, the animated statue!), and Allan Jeayes (as the narrator).

Here is an image of the front cover and the back "poster page" (see larger images by clicking on these thumbnails). Note that in those days almost every movie had a completely different image for every single  poster, and that this pressbook had a really cool full-color cover image that was different from the posters!

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 25,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!).
