Many very long time collectors mention to me they have thought of giving their entire collection to a museum. Most likely they envision a huge tax write-off, PLUS they imagine the museum will proudly display all or most of the collection, within a room or building named for them!

And, in the vast majority of cases, nothing could be further from the truth.

1) These days, to get any kind of tax write-off, you need the entire collection appraised piece-by-piece, which costs between thousands and tens of thousands of dollars (and YOUR appraiser's opinion may be later challenged by the government).

2) Almost all museums at best display a tiny portion of what is donated, most often without any kind of identification of who donated it, and the rest languishes in the museum's basement or warehouse, often not touched for decades.

3) There have been many, many cases of museum employees sneaking donations out of the museum and selling them, and many other cases where donations are poorly stored and deteriorate badly.

THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY... And there is! You can have your collection auctioned, and then all the items will go directly into the hands of collectors who love owning them PLUS you can then take the proceeds and (if you want) donate some or all of that money to any worthwhile institutions you choose, and those cash donations WILL be fully tax deductible and the government won't ever challenge it!

So please bear all of the above in mind before considering donating your collection, and if you ever hear a friend thinking of doing so, please do them a favor and pass the above information on to them!
