The Merry Widow, the 1925 Erich von Stroheim silent romantic love triangle European royalty epic ("Let joy be unconfined"; "Brother against brother!"; "The lure of untold wealth"; "Prince Danilo held her in his arms."; "Like wine in their blood ran the melody of the intoxicating walts. 'Kiss me, Danilo,' she whispered"; "From the famous Henry W. Savage stage success by Franz Lehar, Victor Leon and Walter Stein"; about a pretty showgirl who travels to a mythical European country, and both the Crown Prince and another nobleman fall in love with her, but the king won't let either of them marry her, so she marries the richest man in the country; he dies on their wedding night in the throes of passion, and she goes back to Paris, after inheriting a fortune, and she throws lavish parties and is known as "The Merry Widow"; many more events happen before she is ultimately united with her true love) starring Mae Murray (in the title role "as the widow"), John Gilbert ("as the Prince"), Roy D'Arcy, George Fawcett, Tully Marshall, Sally O'Hara, and Clark Gable (as one of the ballroom dancers; in one of his 14 uncredited roles prior to making his real debut in 1931's "The Painted Desert"). Note that this movie was remade in 1952 starring Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas.
