An Original Vintage Theatrical Three-Sheet Magic Show Poster (3sh; measures 41 1/2" x 80" [105 x 203 cm]) (Learn More) Prince Kar-mi, the 1914 poster advertising a magic show starring Prince Kar-Mi ("Mysteries of the Spirit World and demonstrations of Occult Powers by a series of Astounding Feats that have no counterpart on Earth!"). Prince Kar-Mi was a famous magician who was born Joseph Hollingsworth in the U.S., but he would dress in the garb of an Indian Prince. He lived from 1872 to 1956. He originally performed at the turn of the 20th century as "Victorina", and he had already printed many posters when he changed his name to Kar-Mi, so he continued using those posters, with a snipe over the Victorina name, but he ran out of those and then printed many more with "Kar-Mi". His act included sword swallowing, sharp shooting, and magic illusions. He had several "signature" tricks that he invented, including "Selma" (where he cremated and revived his female assistant), and "Shooting a Cracker from a Man's Head" (which is pretty self explanatory). He was also a tattoo artist, and between shows he would sell tattoos to his customers. He retired from performing in the mid 1930s, when he was in his 60s, and he passed away at the age of 84! The poster is dated 1914 at lower right, and it shows a great image of Kar-Mi in a white turban and clothing with unusual markings. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this three-sheet measures 41 1/2" x 80" [105 x 203 cm]. The poster is onto a very heavy stiff board. It appears that this would have been done in 1914, or soon after. While it certainly makes the poster easy to display (because it can be leaned against something, or could be attached to a wall with nails above and below), it also makes the poster very difficult to ship, because it will need to go in a three-sheet size flat package, so please bear this in mind before you place a bid on this poster (and please do not bid on this poster if you live outside the U.S. and would need it shipped to you directly, because it would surely cost a huge amount to send outside the U.S.). Condition: fair to good. The poster is mounted onto a heavy stiff board . It appears that this was done in 1914 or soon after, and it appears the poster was shellacked (which clearly protected it, but which might add greatly to restoration cost if one wanted to remove it from the board). It will cost a great deal to ship this poster, and the cost of restoration (if the new owner desires) will be high, so please bear both these costs in mind BEFORE you place a bid on this poster!
