An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style B One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Twentieth Century, the classic 1934 Howard Hawks New York City Broadway theater stage acting romantic screwball comedy ("Broadway's greatest comedy smash - even greater on the screen!"; "From the notable New York Stage Success by Ben Hecht - Charles MacArthur - Chas B. Millholland"; about a legendary Broadway director who takes a simple girl and makes her a huge star, and then becomes obsessed with her; surely one of the greatest of all movies ever made, comedy or otherwise!) starring John Barrymore (as Oscar Jaffe), Carole Lombard (as Lily Garland aka Mildred Plotka), Walter Connolly, Roscoe Karns, Ralph Forbes, Charles Lane, and Etienne Girardot (as the fake rich man who goes around giving out "fortunes"). Note that Charles Bruce Millholland, who was an assistant to legendary Broadway producer David Belasco, wrote a play parodying Belasco, which he could not get performed (perhaps because people were afraid of Belasco). In 1934, it was used as the basis for this classic movie. This is one of those rare movies that everyone agrees is a masterpiece, surely one of the finest romantic comedies ever created and many say it is one of the handful of finest movies of any kind, period! This is not that surprising, considering that many of the greatest talents of classic Hollywood came together to create this! From legendary director Howard Hawks, to the superb screenwriting team of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, and the acting talents of the amazing John Barrymore and Carole Lombard, everything in this screwball romantic comedy "works" to perfection!

Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned an example of the style A one-sheet, and that was 33 years ago, when it sold for $23,100, but we have NEVER before auctioned this style B one-sheet! While almost all first release one-sheets from ALL 1934 movies are frustratingly ultra-rare, one-sheets from THIS classic go far beyond that! In the 1970s, a collector purchased this Style B one-sheet from another longtime collector, and at that point, it was the first one-sheet of either style that was known to have surfaced. Flash forward 17 years, and we were consigned an example of the Style A one-sheet for our second Christie's auction in 1992, and it sold for $23,100. In the THIRTY TWO additional years since, NO additional example of either poster has surfaced! Now, the collector who purchased this poster FIFTY YEARS ago has consigned it to us, and it remains the only example of this poster we know of. And it may well be DECADES more before another example of either style surfaces, but come the end of this auction, THIS POSTER WILL ABSOLUTELY HAVE A NEW OWNER, because, as with all posters we auction, it has no reserve at all!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had separation on parts of the vertical fold and in the center of the bottom horizontal fold, and someone had put tape on the back of those areas. There were also some tiny tears in small parts of the folders. It had tiny pinholes and some tiny bits of paper loss in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. This poster was linenbacked many years ago by the legendary Igor Edelman, and he did a fantastic job, and this wonderful and rare poster will display great on its new owner's wall!
