An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 39 1/2" x 59 1/2" [100 x 151 cm]) (Learn More)

The Petrified Forest, the classic 1936 Archie Mayo romantic crime thriller ("From Leslie Howard's Famous Stage Hit"; "The Stars of 'Of Human Bondage' Reunited For The First Time"; based on the play by Robert E. Sherwood; about an educated hobo, a pretty waitress, and a desperate criminal all interacting at a remote cafe) starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Charlie Grapewin, Humphrey Bogart (as Duke Mantee), Dick Foran, Genevieve Tobin, Porter Hall, Paul Harvey, Joe Sawyer, and Adrian Morris. Note that Humphrey Bogart is 4th billed, and was not pictured on many of the posters! He had begun acting on the stage in the 1920s, but to no real success. In 1930 he got a Hollywood contract at Fox Pictures, but he had little success there, and they released him after two years. He returned to the stage, and in 1936 finally was noticed in the small but vital role in the stage production of this classic play, where he appeared with Leslie Howard. Howard was signed for the movie version of the play, and he insisted, over studio objections, that Bogart be cast as well (he sent a telegram to Warners that read "No Bogart, no Howard"). Bogart never forgot this great kindness, and he much later named his daughter "Leslie".

Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned three examples of this poster, and the last one was 10 years ago! However, each of those three posters were mounted to a very heavy board, and therefore had to be sent to the winning bidder in a very large flat package. But the owner of this poster did something very special with it! When he acquired it, it was on a heavy board (it might have been one of the three we previously auctioned), and he gave it to an expert restorer, who removed it from the heavy board and linenbacked it, which means that it can now be rolled and sent in a tube that measures 42" long. This also allowed the restorer to perform restoration to the poster, so it displays really well, which gives it a big plus over the ones on a heavy board!

Note that this poster is a special 40" by 60" poster that was created by the "Meloy Bros. Inc" company of Shelbyville, Indiana in 1935 and 1936! This company created special 40" x 60" posters that were distributed to theaters in the Midwest, and are NOT like 40" x 60" posters that were created by the studios at that time. VERY IMPORTANT! CLICK ON THIS LINK TO READ FULL INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SPECIAL POSTERS (do not bid on this set of five posters until you have read the information on the linked page).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, when the poster was created, it was mounted on a heavy board. Someone removed that board and then mounted it onto linen, but otherwise did very little restoration, except for a small area in Davis' upper lip, where there was image loss. Otherwise, the poster had just a few creases and scuffs scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
