An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card #5 (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Shane, the classic 1953 George Stevens (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) family relationship cattlemen vs. homesteaders epic cowboy western ("There Never Was a Man Like Shane... There Never Was A Picture Like Shane!"; "Color by Technicolor"; "Screenplay by A.B. Guthrie, Jr."; "Additional Dialogue by Jack Sher"; based on the equally fine novel by Jack Schaefer; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Alan Ladd (in the title role as Shane), Jean Arthur (as Marian Starrett), Van Heflin (as Joe Starrett), Brandon De Wilde (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Joey), Jack Palance (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Wilson), Emile Meyer (as Rufe Ryker), Ben Johnson (as Chris Calloway), Edgar Buchanan (as Fred Lewis), Elisha Cook Jr. (as Stonewall Torrey), Douglas Spencer (as Swede Shipstead), John Dierkes (as Morgan Ryker), Ellen Corby (as Mrs. Torrey), Paul McVey (as Sam Grafton), and Nancy Kulp (as Mrs. Howells). Note that we all know this movie is an incredible classic, but it didn't look it at the time! Originally, Montgomery Clift was to play Shane and William Holden as Joe Starrett (that would have been a very different movie!), but the cast was changed when both those actors took other roles. It was filmed in the middle of 1951 but the studio was not pleased with it, and it was not released until 1953, after a long time of editing the movie by George Stevens. It opened at Radio City Music Hall, and was a big success! Note that Alan Ladd was 40 when the movie was released, and Jean Arthur was over 50 (ten years older than grizzled Emile Meyer, who played Rufe Ryker), and the movie revitalized both their careers! Important Added Info: Note that Paramount did not make title cards at this time, and in an unusual move, chose eight of the key scenes from the movie for the 8 lobby cards. Most often, lobby card sets of this period have one or two good scenes, and often have several scenes that seem to have been chosen for no reason at all, but all of the scenes from the "Shane" set represent important scenes from the movie, and of course, as was typical of Paramount at the time, one of the scenes is a portrait of the top three stars, but even then, the card is not a typical pose portrait, but shows all three stars holding guns, a scene that does not appear in the movie! Condition: good. There is a long Y-shaped crease in the top center of the card running through the "EAN" of "JEAN" and into the image background at the top of the image. There is a 1" scratch in the background above the horse at right, and a couple of scratches above the dog's head and one small scratch in the dog's ear. There are a couple of tiny stains just above Ladd's hat and some creases, smudges, and pinholes around the edges of the card. Someone put some tape on the back of parts of the top border, covering some of the pinholes. Learn More about condition grades
