A Linenbacked Italian Advertising Poster (measures 12 1/4" x 18 1/4" [31 x 46 cm]) (Learn More)

John Hopps & Sons, the circa 1940s version of an Italian advertising poster that was originally printed in 1923, promoting a brand of Marsala wine, and featuring art the Roman god Mercury holding multiple flags which are protruding from a bottle of the wine. We have seen other versions of this poster that measure different sizes, but they are all extremely difficult to precisely date. Our best guess is that this poster is from no later than the 1940s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned a different example of this poster which had printer information at the bottom, and based on that printer information, we thought it was from the 1940s, not 1923, when the art was originally created. This poster could be from 1923, or it could also be from the 1940s, and we are calling it that to err on the side of safety. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this uncertainty.

Also note that this poster is linenbacked, and normally we would send linenbacked posters rolled in a tube, but because this is a very small poster, and because rolling it might caused it to have creases, we intend to send it in a small flat package instead (however, if the purchaser of this poster also purchases other linen posters, and absolutely wants us to send it rolled with those other linens, we will do so).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded and had some minor wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
