An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Floyd Patterson vs Ingemar Johansson, the 1959 - 1961 (see below) boxing sports fight movie ("See it now on film!"; "Action thrills in slow motion!"; "Official world's heavyweight championship fight films!"; "Better than ringside!"). Note that Patterson and Johansson first fought in 1959 (Johansson won in a stunning upset) and United Artists used the release of this film to also promote The Horse Soldiers with the tagline "See! Hear! At Ringside! John Wayne, William Holden, Stars of 'The Horse Soldiers'". Patterson and Johansson had a rematch in 1960 (Patterson reclaimed the championship) but we have not seen a 1960 poster. Patterson and Johansson fought their third match in 1961 (Patterson won) and United Artists created a poster that looked very similar to the 1959 poster, except that it had "Now Playing" next to an empty box instead of a promo for The Horse Soldiers. We've seen what appears to be a studio-issued snipe attached to the 1961 posters, which says "The tremendous third bout!" If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a collection of 6 one-sheets from film versions of professional boxing matches! In the days before such events moved to network television, top boxing matches would be filmed at ringside and then shown later in movie theaters, complete with commentary. Such posters are far more rare than posters from movies. Our consignor collected these six over many years, and they are being offered in 6 separate auctions. This is a rare opportunity to acquire any or all of these 6 posters! Condition: good. The poster has rippling mainly around the edges and in the lower quarter, with a few drip stains at lower left and some tiny patches of slight discoloration in a few areas. There are pairs of staple holes around the edges and there are pairs of staple holes scattered vertically at left and right (some are torn or enlarged due to rough removal). Despite the defects the poster is still colorful and otherwise "all there" and after linenbacking with some restoration the poster will display well. Learn More about condition grades
