An Original Vintage Theatrical Silk Banner Movie Poster (measures 40 1/4" x 105" [102 x 267 cm]) (Learn More) The Little Princess, the classic 1939 Walter Lang juvenile orphan family musical melodrama ("A great classic comes to life in glorious Technicolor!"; based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck; a rich little girl's father is an English army officer and is sent to Africa in the Boer War and she is put in a fancy boarding school and is treated royally; when he is reported dead, she is turned into a maid! She searches endlessly for her father, with predictable results) starring Shirley Temple, Richard Greene, Anita Louise, Ian Hunter, Cesar Romero (memorable as Ram Dass, the Indian Servant), Arthur Treacher, Mary Nash, Sybil Jason, Miles Mander, Marcia Mae Jones, and Beryl Mercer (as Victoria, the Queen of England). Note that Sybil Jason was born in South Africa, but was a singing and dancing child prodigy in England from the age of 2. When she was 6, Jack Warner saw her perform, and signed her to a contract hoping she could be a child star for Warner Bros. to equal Shirley Temple at 20th Century-Fox. However, after a few movies, including starring opposite Al Jolson in "The Singing Kid", she did not deliver the hoped for results, and Warner Bros. did not renew her contract in 1938. Daryl Zanuck signed her at 20th Century-Fox, putting her with Shirley Temple in this movie. She was supposed to have a major role in "The Blue Bird", opposite Shirley Temple, but most of her scenes were cut from the movie (perhaps because it was feared she would "upstage" Shirley Temple, who was "getting old"!), and she "retired". In 1947, at the age of 18, she married a Navy man, and they had a child and were married for 58 years until his passing in 2006, and she passed away in 2011 at the age of 83! Important Added Info: Note that the vast majority of silk banners we have seen are close to 40" x 55" in size. However, this banner is 40 1/4" x 105"! We do not have a wall that size, so it was photographed in two images that were joined together (but we assure you that the banner is one single piece of silk!). Also note that in the 1930s and 1940s, movie studios made silk burgees (also called silk banners) for most major releases. These were printed on a silk (or silk-like) material, sometimes with a gold fringe at the bottom, and usually with an opening at the top through which a wooden pole could be inserted, usually with a rope attached to both ends of the pole, so that the burgee could be hung from a nail at the theater. Few silk burgees are known to survive (we have only auctioned around a dozen of them in our many years of auctioning), and many collectors are not even aware of their existence! Also note that in December 2015, we were consigned a remarkable find of TWENTY THREE of these silk banners! That is double the amount we had auctioned in all our previous 25 years of auctioning. They auctioned for prices mostly ranging from $70 to $1,100 (the lower priced ones were ones that had major condition issues). ONE of those 23 banners was never paid for, so we are now re-auctioning it (it is the same one from that December 2015 auction). Condition: good to very good. The banner has brown stains in the bottom right corner and in the upper right of the right border and some very light staining scattered in some parts of this very large banner, more so in the background areas. It could be displayed and enjoyed just as it is, or surely, a talented restorer could remove some or all of the staining through chemical means. Note that banners like these are extremely rare (see above) and the few that survive often have deterioration in the silk, and sometimes the pole is missing or damaged. Some of this collection of 23 silk banners that this banner was found with have survived in better condition than the majority of the similar silk banners we have seen in the past.
