An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, the classic 1935 Lew Landers (billed as "Louis Friedlander") Universal plastic surgery horror thriller ("An adaption of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven"; VERY loosely based on the famous poem by Edgar Allan Poe; about a crazy plastic surgeon who saves a girl's life, but is rejected by her so he mutilates the face of a criminal to have him kidnap the girl after which he promises to restore the criminal's face!) starring Boris Karloff ("The uncanny master of make-up in a new amazing shocker"), Bela Lugosi (billed as "Bela 'Dracula' Lugosi"), Irene Ware, Lester Matthews, Inez Courtney, Samuel S. Hinds, Ian Wolfe, Spencer Charters, Maidel Turner, and Arthur Hoyt. Note that this is one of the only movies that feature both of the greatest horror actors EVER, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi TOGETHER, and just about everyone agrees is a wonderful movie, and quite a few (including myself) think it is the BEST of the movies these two giants made together! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: All first release one-sheets from this classic horror movie are ultra-rare, and until we were consigned this half-sheet the only poster from it we had ever auctioned was a heavily restored window card! Twenty six years ago, we auctioned the Title Card and three scenes (in 1998) and those sold for $12,363, $6,440, $3,450 and $1,380! Now we have been consigned this wonderful half-sheet, and best of all, it is NOT backed, and it only has minor tape on the back from when it was framed; see below). This will likely be the centerpiece of the new owner's collection, and come the end of this auction, THIS POSTER WILL ABSOLUTELY HAVE A NEW OWNER, because, as with all our auctions, it truly has no reserve! Note that while this poster could conceivably be rolled, it is very old, we don't believe that it would make sense to roll it, as rolling it would have a chance of damaging it, and of course, no one wants that to happen, especially because it is not backed! Therefore we will send it in a very large flat package that measures approximately 24" x 30", unless the new owner insists on us rolling it and will accept responsibility for the chance of damage. Please bear that extra shipping cost in mind BEFORE placing a bid on this poster! Condition: very good. The poster has some tiny creases and scuffs on both folds, but surprisingly minor. It has staining on the back, which bleeds through to the front in the upper left of the book, mostly in the yellow area, but entering the "B" of "Bela" and just touching the bottom of the "K" of "KARLOFF". What is odd is that the poster itself has areas of darkening on the book cover that are part of the printing (so that it would look like an "old" book), and the new stain that bleeds through from the back looks like it could be part of the intentional darkening on the cover. What we are certain of is that the darkening we describe above IS part of the printing, and that only the bleed-through from the stain on the back is an actual defect (and ironically, the one other example of this poster that we could find on the Internet appears to have had all of the yellow on the book cover painted over, surely because the restorer thought that the discoloration on the cover was a defect, and wanted to "correct" it, by painting all of it). The poster has some minor creases around the edges and it has two thin pieces of conservation tape on the back of the top border, where the poster was attached to a mat. The poster is not at all fragile, and other than the stain described above, has survived in pretty remarkable condition. One might choose to have restoration performed to that stain, or certainly, one might choose to leave this wonderful poster exactly as it is, but that will be the choice of its new owner. Note that, because the stain on the back of the poster is very significant to describing the condition of the poster, we have taken an image of the back of the poster and placed it on this auction, something we don't normally do with half-sheets.
