HYDE linen Belgian '40s different art of Spencer Tracy, Turner & Bergman! Date Sold 11/6/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Undated (probably 1940s; from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 10 3/4" x 16" [27 x 41 cm]) (Learn More) Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the classic 1941 Victor Fleming romantic love triangle horror thriller ("A good woman -- A bad woman -- He needed the love of both!"; "He wanted excitement... yet he dared not admit it to himself. He yearned for secret romance... but he hid his desires from his beautiful young fiancee. Then his dreams became reality... and thrilling drama flooded his lie."; "Based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson") starring Spencer Tracy (in the title role as Dr. Henry Jekyll/Mr. Hyde), Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner, Donald Crisp, Ian Hunter, Barton MacLane, and C. Aubrey Smith. Note that this movie was a remake of the 1920 silent movie with John Barrymore, and also a remake of the 1931 sound version with Fredric March. Not only were March and Tracy Best Actor Oscar winners, but they also much later played opposite each other in the courtroom drama, "Inherit the Wind". Also note that it appears that MGM was somewhat shy about presenting this movie as a horror movie, because unlike the earlier versions, both of which were from Paramount Pictures, MGM not only did not push the horror elements of this movie in their advertising, but they also barely showed Tracy as Hyde in any of their publicity material! Finally, note that based on their previous roles each actress had taken, it would have seemed much more reasonable to have Lana Turner play the "bad" woman and have Ingrid Bergman play Dr. Jekyll's noble girlfriend, but the two took the opposite roles, and both did admirably! During World War II in Belgium, there was a massive paper shortage, and so they used whatever paper they could find to print the movie posters, and in many cases they used old maps or old posters, and printed the movie posters on the reverse. They often also made the posters smaller, so they could get more posters printed. This practice continued for a couple of years after World War II. Since these posters are original, and since all such posters are printed on the back of maps or other posters, this is not considered a defect by almost all collectors. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The top of the poster was slightly trimmed, and it was printed on the back of a map . It was folded across the middle and had creases and fine surface paper loss along that fold and some creases and scuffs in the top left of the image. The poster was reused in 1954, and there is a tax stamp in the lower right, and black smudges across the bottom 2" that likely occurred at that time. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
