An Original 1946 (from the first English release of this movie) Vintage Theatrical English Movie Pressbook (measures 7 1/2" x 10"; 8 pages) (Learn More)

The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age.

Important Added Info: Note that this pressbook is undated, but we have done research on it, and we believe that it dates from 1946, and that this is the time of the very first release of "The Wizard of Oz" in England. It seems likely that World War II prevented the movie from being released prior to that time. There are two places in this pressbook where the ads mention that the movie is a "re-issue", but we think this is because it was released 7 years after the movie's first release in the U.S. If anyone can show us evidence that this movie DID play in England prior to 1946, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that the back cover of the pressbook has a notation that "owing to the ruling of His Majesty's government, no posters may be printed in future larger than Quad-Crowns -overall size: 1,200 square inches", and goes on to explain that MGM therefore will only make two posters, a 30" x 40", and a 20" x 60", both of which were the maximum size. It also talks about paper restrictions in a different part of that page. It seems certain that these paper restrictions were in place immediately after World War II, and it is certain that they were removed within a few years, when there were no longer paper shortages. We welcome any additional information on any of the above, and will add anything we are sent to this auction! Note that the interior pages of this pressbook contain newspaper ads and advertising stories that I have not seen anywhere else, making this a wonderful "Wizard of Oz" collectible!

Condition: very good to fine. The pressbook was lightly folded in half down the middle. There is a tiny stain in the "M" of "Mayer" in the cover and it slightly bled through to the second, third, and fourth pages (as a dot stain in the top blank border). Otherwise, there are a very few tiny defects in some of the pages, but overall, the pressbook has probably survived in about as good condition as could be hoped for!
