An Original Vintage Paperbacked Swiss Stage Play Poster (measures 35 1/4" x 50" [90 x 127 cm]) (Learn More)

Palestrina, the 1917 Swiss stage play production (of the 1917 opera by German composer Hans Pfitzner; based on a legend about the Renaissance musician Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, who saves the art of contrapuntal music [polyphony] for the Church in the sixteenth century, through his composition of the Missa Papae Marcelli, and it is about the role of music in the European Reformation; Pfitzner not only composed the opera but also the libretto) which was performed by a troupe from Munich's Hoftheater in multiple Swiss cities (Basel, Bern and Zurich). Note that this poster features Emil Cardinaux art of a man with angels above him. Emil Cardinaux was a Swiss painter and poster artist from the 1890s to 1936. Cardinaux created many works in various media (book illustrations, cards, caricatures, landscapes, murals, stained glass and posters). Cardinaux was one the first artists to recognize the specific qualities a poster had to fulfill. Even in his earliest designs, he tried to create tightly structured pieces of art that would function as independent of their surroundings as possible. His posters stood out from the masses of ordinary ads put up on a daily basis, and their ingenious simplicity and masterly execution excite collectors up to the present day.
Artist: Emil Cardinaux
Important Added Info: Note that this poster is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Because this poster was paperbacked onto a very thin paper backing, it will be sent rolled in a tube.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had small tears scattered down the right edge, with a few pinholes down the left and right. Someone had the poster paperbacked, likely to prevent further tears in the left and right borders, because no restoration was performed. It appears that after the poster was backed, it acquired many brown dot stains in the bottom left and bottom right, slightly entering the letters at lower left. There are also a few tiny stains in the bottom center of the text. We would think this surely occurred after the poster was paperbacked, or else the restorer would have addressed those things. One could certainly display this rare poster as it is, or one could choose to have restoration performed to the above defects. Please bear this in mind before bidding.
