An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26" x 40 1/2" [66 x 103 cm]) (Learn More)

Sins of the Fathers, the 1928 Ludwig Berger family relationship romantic bootlegging alcohol melodrama ("Story by Norman Burnstine"; about a man who is a waiter, and he has a family and owns the restaurant, but then he gets a mistress and his wife finds out and dies, and he becomes a bootlegger and is caught and sent to jail after his own son is blinded from drinking his moonshine, and when he gets out of jail, he gets a job as a waiter again, and the movie ends with him meeting his son, who forgives him, and who has regained his sight) starring Emil Jannings, Ruth Chatterton (in her very first movie after a successful stage career, and she has the starring role, and she was 35 at the time), Barry Norton, Jean Arthur, and Jack Luden. Note that this movie was one of the first silent movies to have some sound in it (it had singing sequences and sound effects, but was otherwise silent).

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has no blank borders, but it has NOT been trimmed. This is something Paramount did from part of 1928 through part of 1931, printing their posters with a "full bleed", meaning the solid borders ran all the way to the edge of the poster, and the small writing at the bottom is within the color area, because there is no white area beneath it. This printing method was abandoned after a short time (probably because printers at the time had difficulty printing with a full bleed). It would not be until around 1990 that printers would again print movie posters with a full bleed! This particular poster measures 26" x 40 1/2" (but as I said above, it was not printed larger than that or with blank borders). We have seen other examples of this poster identified as measuring 27" x 41", but that is absolutely incorrect.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had an extra horizontal fold just below the regular two horizontal folds, with minor wear on the foldlines. It had a long tear that began slightly above the center of the right border and ran to the left into Jannings' cheek and through the very bottom of his nose and ending below his eye. The poster had some tiny paper loss in the upper right blank border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
