An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Hell's Angels, the classic 1930 Howard Hughes World War I (WWI) England Royal Flying Corps military airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle melodrama (produced by Howard Hughes; "Howard Hughes' Thrilling Air Spectacle"; "Howard Hughes' Amazing Air Spectacle"; "The First Multi-Million Dollar Talking Picture"; "Howard Hughes' thrilling multi-million dollar - air spectacle"; about two brothers at Oxford who join the RAF when World War I starts, and they both fall for the same beautiful girl, but when they go off on a bombing mission, they return to find her with yet a third man) starring Jean Harlow, Ben Lyon, James Hall, John Darrow, Lucien Prival, and Douglas Gilmore. Note that filming on this movie originally started in 1927, and it was being filmed as a silent, and Greta Nissen had the lead female role. But the movie took a very long time to make, and by that point, sound had taken over Hollywood, and producer/director Howard Hughes made the unusual decision to entirely re-shoot the movie with sound. And since Greta Nissen had a strong Norwegian accent (which made no difference in silent movies, but obviously was terrible for sound), and since Jean Harlow had come along, Hughes replaced Nissen with Harlow, which was the greatest break of Harlow's career, but heartbreaking for Nissen, who continued in movies without a big break until 1937, when she retired! I have been a movie poster collector for 40+ years, and a full-time dealer for 18 years, and I had always been under the 100% assumption that both the "Hell's Angels" and "Scarface" posters that DO NOT have "United Artists" on them, and which are both printed by the "M.R. Litho Company", were re-release posters (probably from 1937). HOWEVER, another auction house recently auctioned the "Scarface" one-sheet printed by "M.R. Litho", and they assert that the "Scarface" one-sheet printed by M.R. Litho PRE-DATES the United Artists poster, and that it was from Howard Hughes' personal distribution of the movie, when he was trying to get the film passed by the censors. Therefore, IF WHAT THEY SAY IS TRUE, it would seem logical that this "Hell's Angels" poster (also printed by M.R. Litho) is ALSO from an apparent Howard Hughes' personal distribution of the movie in 1930, BEFORE it was distributed by United Artists! Because I do not know what proof this other auction house has of their claim, I personally make no representation that this is correct, and no one should bid on this poster assuming that I, Bruce Hershenson, believe or guarantee it to be from 1930 and from before the United Artists release. However, if you believe that the other auction house is correct in their saying that the "Scarface" one-sheet from M.R. Litho is from BEFORE the United Artists release, then you might logically also believe this poster ("Hell's Angels" one-sheet printed by M.R. Litho) is from before the United Artists release, and therefore from 1930. Please read the above very carefully, and then bid (or do not bid) on the poster based on your assessment of what you have read! Finally, note that the 1930 United Artists version of this poster has signed Hap Hadley art, and while this poster has artwork that looks quite similar to that poster, the art on this poster is NOT signed by Hap Hadley, and, looking at the two images side-by-side, I do not personally believe that the art on this poster was created by Hap Hadley. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and there was a "cross" of tape put on the back of the middle crossfold (approximately 3" x 3"; for reinforcement). There was a 7" vertical tear in the center of the right edge of the background (solely in the sky background area below the wing of the plane, and ending in the background area above the "S" of "ANGELS"). There was a 3" horizontal tear in the middle of the left border 2" below the middle foldline. There were some creases and smudges on some of the foldlines and some creases, smudges, small tears, and tiny areas of paper loss in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and looks great! Learn More about condition grades
