Barney Google is a character created by Billy DeBeck in 1919 in the comic strip Take Barney Google, F'rinstance. In 1922, the strip would take a momentous turn in popularity with the introduction of a race horse named "Spark Plug". The comic strip was soon renamed Barney Google and Spark Plug. In 1934, the character Snuffy Smith was introduced and the strip was then known as Barney Google and Snuffy Smith. The Barney Google character was adapted to film, cartoons, popular songs and television. It also inspired the 1923 hit tune Barney Google with lyrics by Billy Rose, as well as the 1923 record Come On, Spark Plug.
