An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 33" [59 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

Sonambiente Festival fur Horen Und Sehen (literally translates to "Sonambiente Festival for Hearing And Seeing"), the 1996 German poster promoting an art and music event celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Akademie der Kunste, which took place in Berlin, Germany. Note that this poster features a design by CYAN, and the current opening exhibition of the new NYC Poster House Museum is dedicated to this artist group. They rose to prominence in Berlin in the 1990s after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 (the designers got their first computer smuggled across the East German border before the wall fell). The group, which still active today, did much of the design for the Bauhaus design school in Dessau (the Bauhaus celebrates their 100th anniversary in 2019). The founders of the company came of age in a Communist society but turned their skills towards commercial art. To ease the conflict between their Communist upbringing and Capitalist endeavors, they were extremely selective on what and who they would design for, and the vast majority of their innovative poster campaigns were for exhibitions, performances, and cultural institutions. But this also meant their clients had small coffers, forcing CYAN to create impactful high quality posters with limited means. To do so, they combined eye-catching designs with new editing software such as Adobe Photoshop before anyone was using them and they were one of the first to experiment with these computer programs. The resulting posters were a completely new take on advertising that aimed to actively engage the viewer in the process of comprehension.
