The Jewish Welfare Board, the 1918 U.S. World War I (WWI) Home Front poster ("Civilians. When we go through this we need all the help and comfort you can give."; "United War Work campaign - Week of November 11-1918") encouraging citizens to donate to help the Jewish Welfare Board send Jewish chaplains to Europe to "help and comfort" Jewish soldiers, and featuring Sidney H. Riesenberg art of a Jewish star (the Star of David) and a soldier standing with raised hand. Note that the National Jewish Welfare Board was formed in early 1917, right after the U.S. declared war on Germany. Its purpose was to train rabbis to become chaplains, just as YMCA and other groups did to create Christian chaplains. In 1941, the National Jewish Welfare Board, along with the YMCA, the YWCA, the Red Cross, and other groups joined together to form the USO (United Service Organization), which provided help and comfort to American military personnel overseas.
Artist: Sidney H. Riesenberg
