Note that this was the only classic 1940s original Universal monster (the others originated in the 1930s). Actually, however, there WAS a 1930s Universal werewolf before this, which was in 1935's "Werewolf of London", but Universal did not like the way Henry Hull's makeup looked in that movie, so they restarted the character in this movie, with completely different makeup!
